Ashes of Bluebird
This is a collection of inspiring, thought-provoking, and sometimes comical stories from Sheriff Terry Ashe who holds a tight rein on the lawless in Wilson County, Tennessee.
Awarded three Purple Hearts and the Bronze Star for Tet-offensive bravery in Vietnam, this former Army recon scout faced his real fear of dying for the first time when he returned home from the war to clean up the blight “across the creek” from the once charming, once peaceful scene of his childhood—Bluebird Road.
Moonshiners, gamblers, drug dealers and prostitutes don’t leave quietly, but the popular Sheriff would win in the end; using his wits to turn the outlaws against each other. The bad guys set fire to each other’s illegal businesses and boarded-up houses as they felt the heat from the High Sheriff, reducing the drug infested area to—ironically—ashes! Problem solved? Maybe not.
The neighborhood has since returned to its original order with law-abiding citizens living in their modest, but well-kept homes. Children ride their bikes on the now safe, quiet street; the way they did when the “Ashes of Bluebird” lived there—but the threats on the Sheriff’s life and talk of revenge from displaced gang members continue years later.
The sometimes controversial, always entertaining lawman’s moxie is bigger than Buford Pusser’s stick and while that doesn’t sit well with outlaws and his political enemies, voters have made him one of the most popular sheriffs in the country; re-electing him term after term for a colorful career that has spanned four decades.
